Back to blog posts

It’s almost time to dust off the gardening gloves and trowels. I eagerly watch the mail for the seeds I ordered, long before I needed them. I keep telling myself not to rush the seed trays; it won't bring spring along any faster!

This time of “pre-spring” is a great time to make sure you will have a successful gardening season. With that in mind… let's start at the bottom of the garden. Yes, the dirt is our main asset towards a great growing summer. It’s never too late or early to start adding compost to a pile or bin in layers; your plants will thank you for years to come.

You can make your own compost by layering garden debris, grass clippings, shredded leaves, vegetable scraps, adding in plenty of water to keep everything moist. If this type of science experiment is not to your taste, there are many types of compost, manures, and soil mixes available to purchase. But don’t forget about adding in PEAT MOSS into the compost cocktail! It helps loosen the soil, preserve the moisture content of your compost, and gives long-lasting benefits to your garden beds.

Next time, I will share some of the fun making “Black Gold” garden compost… a.k.a. vermicomposting!
